Visited the hospital doctors…

Just got home after my appointment from KU Med. My head was cut-up after the incision/surgery on the left side and it looked good. Wanted to check up on that. Came out good and the doc said I could go ahead and shave my face near my ear which would show off some stuff on the left side. Have to wait and see…

The doctor said:

  • The incision in my head looked great.
  • I defiantly need “cognitive therapy”.
  • Strength is good.
  • Need to strengthen my neck because my head leans to the right.

That was about it after the doctor said that I needed to see him in 3 months.

He also talked and said the scars on the top of my head from November will probably stop the hair from growing. So, that means I have these scar lines in my head that were used to show where my head was cut at, I will not have hair growing there. Hmmmm… What do I do now? Maybe wear a hat all the time? Just shave my ugly-striped top of my head all the time? I just have to think and see…

Yeah, yeah, yeah…

I’m alive! Alive!

This is “just” what the hospital says to me that I can honestly remember in my head: show up and wait in the waiting room, and leave the day when I do. When I was checking into the hospital, this place had quite a few people coming in… Next, it just comes to my mind that I just awaken after a couple weeks right before I was walking out the door. I have absolutely no idea what has been happening between “after showing up” and “ready to leave and walk out the door”. Uh, okay…. This was several weeks: January 23rd – February 11th.

Ok… After stepping out of the hospital on February 11th (and eating IHOP), I went to Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital there in Gardner, KS. Mmmmm…. This was different type of new location to me and I had NO real idea what was going to be going on until I got there and was dropped off to a room. Well, that’s somewhat okay… I had to stay 2 weeks. Now, I had to do therapy everyday while I’m there. Whatever. Nothing too hard. They also were checking if I was half-way smart enough to cook biscuits, cakes, and cookies just to see if I can. Everyday, I would tell them to let me have the foods I would make and sometimes we’d remember and sometimes we wouldn’t. Whatever. I always did the cooking right there basically in the same small kitchen as the workout room. This meant that I only had one lady watching me as I did this all this “stuff”. Now, there was only once near the end of my being at that building, I had four ladies ask me come to another large kitchen type room located in an opposite location of the building. When I went there, I had four younger ladies than me come with me and they just talked with each other while I cooked a bit. Sometimes given the chance to eat. ha ha…

There were other things I did at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital: Using weights and pedaling and walking. Oh, one more thing, one lady that worked up front automatically thought that I could fix her Apple Notepad. I know nothing about those, but I said I probably could just so I could give it a try and maybe play with it. No success. Oh well. I brought my computer though.

I came all the way back home from after staying 2 weeks at the Rehab Hospital location. My opinion, the place was crazy but I enjoyed some of the other people staying there.  It wasn’t very good thinking: I hadn’t been in the “best mood” and working in the “best thinking head” for the best excuse to write for myself. Things are working better today.  Today, being Thursday March 6th… hard to say what I’m doing.

I’m still waiting to hear back from the state for the returns on disability. This was a very, very quick court time. My lawyer told me that I had over a 99% of winning that court. When this happens, this should help out. I’ll see exactly if I won within a few weeks. This is sounding good. We’ll wait on that.

Stitches Out Monday (by Sherry)

Darren’s therapy set up for this week and next (OT) and I have his first Speech Therapy set up. They want and evaluation before they let us schedule more. So Wednesday- outpatient therapy starts. He is having that locally here in Olathe.

Called KU Med to get his stitches out scheduled and they wanted him to come in today! So we headed to KU this afternoon. As soon as the RN came out to get him – he recognized her!!! She was the same person that took out his staples back in November. I had given him some pain medication before we left. He still had some major “hurt” when they were removed.

Called the Optometrist and go him an appointment as well. After talking to the doctor we were advised that we should wait 6 months before he goes and gets new glasses.

28 Days Later…. HOME! (by Sherry)

Darren will continue to have Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Speech Therapy but now it is Outpatient!

Darren sent me a text at 9am and asked me when I was coming to get him. They did not have him scheduled for any therapy today. So I finished up some stuff at home and got him out of there!!

He was working on a patient satisfaction survey- and he made it known he did not like the food.

We got home and he climbed up the stairs and plopped down in his chair and proceeded to fall asleep. He napped for about an hour and a half and then he decided he wanted Chinese to eat.

His first plate was full of Crab Rangoon and Sushi. He took a bite of the Sushi and said “Oh yes! That has some kick to it! I like that!” So I think his taste buds are returning. He certainly is enjoying food a bit more.

February 19 – Wonderful Visiting Day! (by Sherry)

We arrived at Bud’s room to find the lights on and he was smiling when he saw us!!! Everyday when we have come the light have been dimmed and he has been frustrated and grumpy. I think he realizes how close he is to coming home too!!!

I got a text message earlier in the day “I’ve been having fun by arguing and showing that I’m not a bad person.” When I asked him what he was arguing about he replied “I’m tired of hearing this other stuff.” He really dislikes his nurse in the morning and way she wakes him up. He has hidden all the chair and bed alarms. He makes his bed so they don’t put another one in. He checks his bed after his therapy sessions to make sure a new one has not been installed. He took a shower on his own last night, and he was not reminded not to get his head wet. So they made him take another shower today- and I guess he got his head wet again. so he got a mini lecture about it while we were there. I have a shower cap for him to use here at the house- since he does not get his stitches out until Feb 27th.

I brought him Sonic and he ate that down quick!!! We then proceeded to play several rounds of UNO.

Poor guy!!! He won a few a couple of nights ago. But he was laughing and having a good time playing those Draw Two’s and those Draw Four Wilds.

We quizzed him about his day- and he said he biked and did some leg lifts with weights. He thought he baked something but wasn’t sure. He was asked to fix a staff person’s IPAD and update it. He told them “It is an Apple… that is your problem” ha ha ha!!! Still hasn’t lost his humor! Nman quizzed him as well. Darren is quicker in answering questions like “What year is it?” He still doesn’t get it right the first time, but he is not having long lags in his responses. He knows where to find the answer if he is not correct.

Here is his incision as of today.

Sexy huh??? He has another week with these stitches.  I think they are keeping them in a bit longer because before- he had some issues when it separated and it is along the same incision as before. We didn’t count the actual number of incisions like we did with the staples though.  Personally, I can’t wait to get that white tape off his glasses!! I want him to get new glasses when this is done.

He was sad we were leaving but it is a school night. Tomorrow night Nman has Scouts tomorrow night so it will just be me Thursday. As we were getting ready to go his parents called.

But if tonight is any clue as to what we have ahead of us- I am happy and thrilled at the healing of this serious surgery. When I was getting texts from him earlier in the week. I was nervous and not sure what would happen when he comes home, but tonight’s visit he was calm, and not in pain and was laughing and he was actually talking and following along with the conversation. We heard the story of the Ipad a few times, but so what! He is remembering things and improving…
